Promoting value addition and product diversification

  • Due to the value-addition training for honey conducted in Singida and Morogoro in 2015 and 2016 respectively, at least 25 enterprises in Tanzania are now using honey to produce value-added products, such as body products, etc. The project also trained trainers from local institutions, including SIDO, TFS and THC, which are in turn training their members and clients in making products from honey.

    SMEs can now get more value from their raw materials and reduce wastage. Capacity building for honey value addition and diversification contributed to opening of new product lines for SMEs. For example, the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has locally certified cosmetics producer Grace Products and the TBS has certified three of its products which have honey wax as ingredients, i.e. lotions and creams.
