Upcycling: A new talent in Jordan
For Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2023, we celebrate small entrepreneurs from all over the world. Small businesses account for 90% of the world's businesses, 60 to 70% of employment, and 50% of the global economy. They contribute to local and national economies and to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. For MSME Day, we have interviewed Zaid Mushaki, a Jordanian fashion designer, founder of Zaid Mushaki Fashion House, a women clothing brand.
Tell us about your company.
My name is Zaid Mushaki. I am a 32-year-old Jordanian fashion designer. I have established Zaid Mushaki Fashion House in 2017, a dynamic and visionary brand. In 2020, we shifted our business model, which allowed us to adopt innovative marketing strategies and introduce rental services for both lines, bridal and evening wear for women. This strategic, and I might say transformative, move allowed made us reach a wider audience.
What are your challenges?
One of our main challenges is the limited availability of materials within Jordan. This scarcity poses obstacles to the design process and to creating unique and high-quality fashion pieces. Additionally, we are facing high rates for shipping and customs.
However, we have been trying to tackle these challenges by enforcing sustainable practices. We are upcycling materials and recycling plastics, transforming them into stunning motifs and design elements. By doing so, we not only address the material scarcity but also demonstrate our strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
What are your needs to further grow?
We have identified two key needs to further our mission and expand our impact: First, the company seeks a robust platform to support and promote local Jordanian designers. Through this platform, Zaid Mushaki Fashion House could create a vibrant community in which talented designers can show their work, collaborate, and gain recognition on a national and international scale.
Second, we recognize the importance of working closely with the government to facilitate the export and import of our goods. A cooperative relationship could help us streamline customs processes, reduce logistical barriers, and enhance the accessibility of our designs to a global audience.
What has been your greatest success?
One of our most notable successes was the recognition received from Her Majesty Queen Rania, a testament to the brand's exceptional design and craftsmanship. This recognition not only brought prestige but also elevated our brand's reputation within the industry.
Another significant milestone was participating in the first edition of Jordan Fashion Week. This platform provided an invaluable opportunity to show our designs to a wider audience, establishing the brand as a prominent player in the fashion landscape. These achievements have served as pivotal moments, propelling our brand forward and opening doors to new collaborations, partnerships, and opportunities for growth.
What message do you have for other entrepreneurs?
My message to fellow entrepreneurs is to persevere in their pursuits and stay true to their vision. It's important to continue working diligently and explore all possibilities that lie within their reach. Challenges may arise, but with determination and resourcefulness, solutions can be found.
Remember to embrace your uniqueness and let it shine through in your work. Authenticity is a powerful asset that resonates with people. Stay focused, remain resilient, and trust in your abilities to make a meaningful impact in your industry. Success comes to those who persistently pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles with unwavering determination. Believe in yourself and keep pushing forward.
