Overview

<p>Jointly with the World Resources Institute (WRI), the International Trade Centre is pleased to announce the upcoming Roundtable on Deforestation-free Global Value Chains.</p><p>The 5th edition aims to bring together leading experts from academia, industry, and government to share best practices and insights on how to achieve deforestation-free global value chains. Key themes to be discussed include the role of technology in monitoring and verifying deforestation-free commitments, the effectiveness of policy instruments in promoting sustainable land use and products traceability, and the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in driving systemic change. The roundtable seeks to provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and explore opportunities to build more sustainable and resilient global value chains.</p>

Launch event: ICC/Sage SME Climate Impact Report - Enabling SMEs to take climate action
SMEs are the backbone of our economies and have a vital role to play in supporting the transition towards a cleaner and more environmentally friendly future in countries around the world, both by reducing the impact of their own operations and reducing the impacts generated in their supply chains. The ICC/Sage SME Climate Impact Report aims to better understand the environmental impact of SMEs in two markets, the United Kingdom and South Africa, and identifies key challenges and opportunities for SMEs to take more ambitious environmental action. Building on the economic research, we have developed a series of recommendations for policy makers to help create an enabling environment that can foster meaningful contributions from the global SME community.
This event will present the recent economic research and participants will have the opportunity to discuss why this transition is particularly challenging for SMEs and propose what climate actions SMEs can take now as well as what actions are needed by the government and business to enable greater SME climate action in the future.

Building a climate smart network
This session will feature the launch of the Climate Smart Network, a new platform developed by the International Trade Centre, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, in which small to medium sized enterprises can showcase their climate smart attributes, compliance to environmental or climate criteria of established certifications or their commitment to low-carbon practices. Representatives from the Department of State, ITC, Salamtex (an Egyptian medium sized enterprise in the textile sector), Bayer Crop Science, and the GOLD Standard will also discuss challenges and opportunities arising from the low-carbon transition in global value chains and ways to support small businesses in the green transition. This platform will serve as a tool for large buyers to search for products that meet their climate goals and help to diversify their supply chains.

Sustainable resilient value chains

Connecting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to value chains and helping them succeed is central to ITC’s mission. We work with all stakeholders in areas that can improve income and employment and have the greatest potential for developmental change, and develop strategies and build partnerships along those value chains. Inclusive trade

 

We understand that inclusion is essential to bridge economic, social and environmental gaps. ITC emphasizes initiatives that create opportunities for women, youth and other people in vulnerable situations, such as the poor, refugees, internally displaced persons, people with disabilities and other often marginalized groups. Environmental sustainability and climate resilience have become key determinants of enterprise competitiveness. ITC supports ecopreneurs and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to build and scale their green innovations and products. We promote the alignment of trade- and environment-related policies. Digital trade

 

ITC centres its efforts on the digitalization of trade and the specific constraints faced by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular e-commerce of goods and services. We focus on facilitating inclusive participation in e-commerce by simultaneously enabling firm growth and addressing challenges faced at the enterprise, business ecosystem and policy levels. Regional integration

ITC’s interventions at the regional and inter-regional level focus on boosting regional trade and advancing South-South trade and investment. We enhance supportive regulatory and institutional environments, and strive to integrate micro, small and medium-sized enterprises into regional value chains and connect them with emerging trade opportunities. Our Core Services

Trade

We work to improve firm-level capacities to trade. ITC addresses the managerial, strategic and operational needs of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and helps create market linkages through a modular approach. We adapt our tools and methodologies to the needs of our clients and provide relevant services either directly or through partner organizations.

Goal

ITC aims to support 75,000 MSMEs in making changes to their business operations in 2022-2025, depending on funding.

Trade development strategies

Business

We strive to create more supportive business ecosystems by providing such services as information, training, legal and financial advice, marketing and advocacy. ITC also works with networks of business support organizations (BSOs) to develop joint strategies to benefit the ecosystem as a whole as well as the individuals working within.

Goal

ITC will support 1,200 BSOs to improve their operations in 2022-2025, depending on funding.

 

 

Policy

We work with government institutions and other stakeholders to craft inclusive, country-owned trade and investment strategies, monitor the implementation of strategies and make policy and regulatory frameworks more conducive for business development. We support trade and investment regimes that reduce compliance costs for MSMEs, and work to mainstream inclusion and environmental sustainability in our public-private dialogues and strategy solutions. Read more about related topic Trade development strategies.

Goal

At least 400 trade-related policies, strategies or regulations will be developed or changed with ITC assistance from 2022-2025, depending on funding.

Intelligence

We provide continuously improved business trade and market intelligence. Our public goods promote transparency and advocate for best practices. They facilitate access to information on trade dynamics, market access conditions, growth potential and policy choices, and possible business partners. We help stakeholders translate information into actionable intelligence, and aim to increase the user-friendliness of our public goods and expand cooperation with other organizations to enhance data collection, dissemination and related activities.

Goal

We plan to test and develop artificial intelligence models to incorporate new sources of data and invest in providing real-time information in selected areas.

Governments are facing the challenge of both creating growth and employment whilst also responding to the climate crisis, in line with their commitments to the Paris Agreement.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>The low carbon transition and the physical and social impacts of climate change are presenting firms in developing countries with new climate competitiveness challenges. This term means that both the physical and social risks of climate change and transition risks pose significant threats to businesses. In many cases, particularly in developing countries, the extent of these risks and opportunities remains unclear or unknown due to lack of awareness or capacity to implement changes.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>The project provides trade intelligence and technical assistance to strengthen the climate competitiveness of MSMEs to successfully navigate the low carbon and just transition. This project will drive impact through capacitating MSMEs, and improving the business and policy ecosystem, to enable them to respond to climate risks and harness related opportunities.</span></p><p><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>The project works in partnership with industry networks, corporations, investors, technology providers and other value chain actors.</span></p>
