The present project is component TWO of SECO's Trade Cooperation Programme (TCP) in Tajikistan, which will start in 2012 and last 30 months. The TCP's overall objective is to contribute to the implementation of complex domestic reforms of Tajikistan to become a full member of the WTO. It is based on an integrated approach, and responds to the recommendations made in the various evaluations and assessments and to the current demand expressed by the Ministry of Economy and Trade of Tajikistan (MEDT) with regard to the WTO accession process.
The TWO main expected outcomes of the project are as follows:
Outcome 1 (Regulatory infrastructure): Improved capacity of SQAM, SPS and TBT bodies and the regulatory infrastructure (ongoing Immediate Objective 4 of “Trade Promotion in Tajikistan – Phase III”). To achieve this, the awareness of the private sector in the agro industrial and textile sectors will be increased in order to improve understanding of the business implications of WTO Accession and trade policy, and become engaged in the WTO negotiation process by voicing their interests, so that the negotiators are able to better advocate industries' needs.
Outcome 2 (Support in the services' sector): Strengthened service providers' knowledge of the opportunities and threats of WTO accession and thereby strengthened negotiation capacities of the four service sectors. To achieve this, the awareness of the private sector in these sectors will be increased in order for them to understand the business implications of WTO accession and trade policy, and become engaged in the WTO negotiation process by voicing their interests, so that the negotiators are able to better advocate industries' needs.
