#LearnFromNeighbor: Tajikistan gains from Uzbekistan’s experience on customs clearance
#Ready4Trade connects Central Asia customs brokers
Dushanbe, 28 May 2021
Stakeholders from the Tajik public and private sectors had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with customs clearance procedures of neighbouring Uzbekistan in Dushanbe. The three-day seminar was organized under the European-Union funded Ready4Trade Central Asia project which is implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC).
The seminar, held from 25 to 27 May was organized jointly with the customs brokers associations of both Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Representatives of the Tajik state entities, trade associations, logistics companies, and customs brokers also attended.
In their presentation, Uzbek customs brokers covered the following topics: export and import customs clearance procedures in Uzbekistan, the automatic customs fees calculation system as well as customs clearance infrastructure such as warehouses, vehicle terminals, related agencies present at customs posts, etc.
Uzbek experts also shared their experience with the Authorized Economic Operators mechanism that was recently introduced in Tajikistan with the support of the Ready4Trade project.
“Considering the growing trade relations between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, better awareness of the neighbouring country’s customs procedures and experience is important both for those businesses importing and exporting goods and Tajik associations and state entities. Tajik businesses can benefit from adopting the latest knowledge and best practices to trade easier and faster,” said Firuza Mahmudova, Chairman of the Tajikistan Association of Customs Brokers.
“Simplifying trade formalities and following WTO requirements are important for boosting Tajikistan’s economy. ITC supports the Tajik public and private sectors in their efforts to gain awareness for the latest best practices on trade facilitation in order to improve the business environment in Tajikistan,” said Saidmumin Kamolov, ITC’s National Project Manager in Tajikistan.
