Senegal: Decrease expected in Ziguinchor groundnut production

The cumulative rainfall deficit from May to the third
quarter of October Senegal was, with small exceptions in certain districts,
moderate to severe. Production of groundnuts is consequently expected to be
lower, due to reduced plantings and yields.
In addition, the late onset of
the rainy season in the Ziguinchor region (south) has led many producers to
revert to the cultivation of sesame, requiring less water, and also more
attractive because of its current high profitability. Sesame producer price is
around 600 to 700 XOF/ha, for an average yield of 500 kg/ha. According to the
Regional Director of Rural Development, many producers in Bignona department -
groundnut area par excellence in the region of Ziguinchor, planted sesame
instead of groundnuts.
However, the rainfall situation has improved in
the last quarter of October, allowing the maturation of crop.
