International Trade Centre releases Guide to Commercial Diplomacy (en)
Are you looking for a competitive edge in promoting your business across borders? If so, a new guide issued by the International Trade Centre can help.
The Guide to Commercial Diplomacy provides a unique compass for commercial diplomats and policy makers that explains how to promote trade and investment abroad and better use diplomatic posts as investment facilitators.
‘Trade and investment are two sides of the same coin and in this rapidly changing landscape, countries and their officials need new and innovative ways of working and developing new skills and partnerships,’ said Arancha González, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre.
‘Our objective is to support policy makers to better harness the power of trade and investment for sustainable and inclusive growth. This guide, and the accompanying training, seeks to do this by helping governments, institutions and businesses take greater advantage of the trade and investment ecosystem to build more effective global networks,’ she said.
Rolled out in Cambodia, Madagascar and Nepal, the guide explores ways to build business intelligence and create partnerships that promote trade and investment. The guide incorporates case studies with a storytelling approach, and is backed by checklists to help trade representatives manage the wide range of duties they conduct abroad.
The guide completes a blended learning package, combining the Guide to Commercial Diplomacy; updated content in ITC’s SME Trade Academy, and new training workshop material and is available in English, French and Spanish.
Ministries of foreign affairs and of trade, as well as trade and investment promotion agencies, will find the package useful to support new diplomats and upskill current staff by focusing on trade and business skills, including prior to their postings abroad. Schools of diplomacy and international relations will find the guide a hands-on addition to their curriculum. Business associations, chambers of commerce and line Ministries will also find the guide of interest in further developing their human resources.
