MEXICO
Location
Mexico is forms a bridge between North America and the
southernmost part of South America, located between the United
States of America to the North and Guatemala to the south. It also
shares its borders with the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to
the East; and the North Pacific Ocean to the west. The country has
a total area of 1,964,375 sq km and has both topical and desert
climate tendencies.
Agricultural sector
Mexico's main agricultural products are indigenous cattle meat,
whole fresh cow milk, indigenous chicken, meat, maize, hen eggs,
indigenous pig meat, sugar cane, sorghum, oranges and
avocados.
Brief overview of organic farming
There are 393,461 hectares of organic land in Mexico and
approximately 128,819 organic producers operating in the country.
Organic land makes up 2.86% of the country's arable land. Most
farmers in the organic market are small-scale farmers, although the
proportion of medium and large-scale farmers is increasing due to
appealing export business incentives. Mexico's organic market
sector has grown rapidly; approximately 30% per year. Most organic
land is used for crop cultivation. Organic land is also used for
livestock and beekeeping.
Brief overview of key organic products
Mexico is the world's leading coffee producer. Organic products
include cacao, avocado, agave, mango, coconut, aloe vera, corn,
citrus fruits, honey and sesame. All these exports are mainly
produced for exporting purposes.
