(Geneva-Kyiv) The International Trade Centre (ITC) has announced that it will develop an Export Strategy for the Ukraine with financial support and in close collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as well as the Ukrainian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT).

The funding from GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will make it possible to finalize work on Ukraine’s Export Strategy in 2018. It follows the successful design and launch in 2017 of Ukraine’s National Strategic Trade Development Roadmap, which provides the framework and main directions for Ukraine’s foreign trade relations.

Announcing the financial support GIZ’s Country Director for Ukraine, Ms Sabine Müller, said: ‘ITC is recognized as the leading agency in the design of trade development strategies and the delivery of trade-related technical assistance. GIZ has partnered with ITC on a number of trade-strategy initiatives and trade-related projects in Africa and Asia. We are looking forward to another fruitful cooperation in 2018 in Ukraine.’

Stepan Kubiv, Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Trade, said: ‘We are extremely grateful to GIZ for supporting the Export Strategy project, which is very important for us. Today export generates over 50% of our GDP and remains the driving force of economic growth of Ukraine. The Strategy will enable the best possible use of Ukraine's existing potential and will help us move from exporting mainly commodities to higher value-added goods, high-tech products.’

Welcoming the financial support, ITC Executive Director Arancha González said: ‘We are very pleased to be continuing our work in Ukraine with the backing of GIZ. This will enable us to support Ukraine in its goal of developing a comprehensive economic vision for the future of the country. It will also allow ITC to assist Ukraine to better leverage trade as a vehicle for growth, job creation, inclusiveness and poverty-reduction.’

Nataliya Mykolska, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade, and Ukraine’s Trade Representative, said: ‘Seven priority sectors were selected during the national consultations for the development of Strategic Trade Development Roadmap of Ukraine. These are sectors in which value added is increasing and will help to further strengthen reforms and innovation. These are sectors that champion new technologies, have high employment potential, SMEs development, and do not depend on fluctuations in foreign markets. We will work together with business and our foreign partners on the elaboration of all sector and cross-sector strategies, because export is after all a team game.’

The overarching goal of the Export Strategy is to support Ukraine in developing a coherent vision for sustainable trade-led growth through an inclusive process that brings together the public and private sectors, civil society and development partners.

The Export Strategy project will help support export-oriented micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and other trade operators in the following priority sectors: information and communication technology; food and beverages; machinery; creative services, and; civil aircraft repair and maintenance. The Strategy will also help strengthen the export competitiveness of Ukrainian companies by boosting knowledge and skills in areas such as trade facilitation and logistics, innovation, and quality management.
