Among the multiple effects of Colombia’s armed conflict is the destruction of livelihoods and, consequently, high levels of rural poverty in today’s post-conflict regions. Taking into account that these areas represent 90% of the country and that 30% of the population lives in them, the transformation of the rural economy has become fundamental to promote reconciliation, peace and development. Within this context, the International Trade Centre (ITC), with the support of the European Trust Fund for Colombia, is currently implementing Colombia PUEDE. This project aims at enhancing income opportunities for 2,000 smallholder farmers in four municipalities of the Department of Nariño deemed as Zones Most Affected by the Armed Conflict (ZOMAC, in Spanish), one of the most affected by the armed conflict.
