     What is social certification?

Social certification systems are based on standards for fair and ethical trade. Fair trade aims a ensuring that small scale producers and workers are given fair terms of trade and fair prices or wages. Ethical trade aims at ensuring that basic labour rights of suppliers' employees are respected. Examples of social certification systems include those of the Fair Trade Labeling Organization International (FLO) (www.fairtrade.net), International Fair Trade Association (www.ifat.org), and of Social Accountability International (SAI) (http://www.sa-intl.org).
