Difficulties in entering the
computer/telecoms equipment and component trade
"Sri Lanka has realized the importance of
getting into the ICT sector, but
it is very difficult. We have
tried to create the right environment. We
have come to an
agreement with India: ICT
equipment can be
exported to India duty-free. But we have a
hard time attracting
investors. They say: why do we have to go
to Sri Lanka -- we are
already operating in India? We point out
that it is cheaper to
transport from Colombo to Madras than from New
Delhi. But still they don't come."

Institute of Information Technology,
Colombo, Sri Lanka.
