Three potential tourism-related
projects which were discussed at a preparatory workshop in Nairobi are being
taken to ITC’s World Export Development Forum (WEDF) in Istanbul for further
development.
Public and private sector experts
worked alongside ITC representatives in early April to develop the first
outline of the potential pilot projects.
The aim was for the project ideas to be further refined during the month
of April, and then brought to a larger public discussion between private and
public sector experts from around the world at the WEDF on 10 – 11 May.
The potential projects which were
discussed in Nairobi were:
- Linking producers of handicrafts in Uganda to
the tourism industry
- Integrating the development of cultural heritage
in Ethiopia into tour operators’ agendas
- Exploring how agri-business collection centers
are established and managed, and the backward linkages of these to the tourism
industry in Tanzania
Two additional workshops will also
be held during WEDF, which had not been discussed in Nairobi as they had
already been initiated. One workshop will look at examples of engaging women
vendors in the tourism value chain, while the other aims to develop a guide to
assist countries in restoring their tourism sector after a crisis.
Each workshop will work towards
attainable means of integrating small- and medium-sized enterprises in LDCs
into the global value chain through tourism.
