In 2001 the People’s Republic of China joined the WTO. Ten years on and China is leading global export figures and has become the world’s second largest economy. In light of this success story as well as the current backdrop of the wider global economic changes, it is a good point in time to look back at the significance of WTO accession to China’s economic development as well as looking forward towards China’s future role in a new global economic order.
