The World Trade Organization is hosting the Aid for Trade Global Review 2017 from 11-13 July in Geneva.
‘Promoting Trade, Inclusiveness, and Connectivity for Sustainable Development’ will be the theme of the Aid for Trade Global Review. It is the seventh such gathering since the WTO’s 2005 launch of the Aid for Trade initiative in an effort to mobilize resources to build supply-side trade capacity in developing countries.

The event ‘will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to look at how best Aid for Trade can contribute to the integration of developing countries and least developed countries into the multilateral trading system and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,’ wrote WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo in his invitation to governments and international organizations.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) will host and co-host sessions on tourism, migration, and women’s economic empowerment during the conference. ITC experts will also participate on panels covering issues ranging from trade and development in The Gambia, to supply chain sustainability, transparency in non-tariff measures, and regional economic integration in Africa.

ITC’s active role at the Aid for Trade Global Review is in line with its mandate to use trade to drive sustainable and inclusive growth by enabling micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to connect to international markets.

Some highlights of ITC’s conference participation to look forward to:

Tourism

On Tuesday, ITC’s chief economist, Marion Jansen, will participate in a discussion on how the tourism industry can be leveraged for sustainable development. Later in the day, ITC will host a session on creating the right environment to support a sustainable tourism industry, covering issues from infrastructure to air transport.

Migration

ITC Executive Director Arancha González will talk ‘Trade, Refugees, and Migrants’ on Tuesday afternoon with a panel of speakers from the private and public sectors, including Ann Linde, Sweden’s minister for EU affairs and trade. They will explore opportunities and challenges in using trade to create economic opportunities for internationally displaced people.

Gender and inclusiveness

On Wednesday, Vanessa Erogbogbo, the head of ITC’s Women and Trade initiative, will moderate a talk on promoting inclusive trade through gender empowerment. This will be followed by a panel featuring Dorothy Tembo, ITC’s deputy executive director, on maximizing inclusiveness through gender-sensitive trade policy.

The Gambia

The Gambia will feature prominently at the Aid for Trade Global Review, with acting Vice-President Fatoumata Tambajang, Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment Isatou Touray and Minister of Tourism Hamat Bah in attendance. On Wednesday, ITC’s Arancha González will join them at a session seeking to attract development cooperation and private investment in developing the country’s trade capacity for increased inclusive economic growth, with a focus on creating jobs for youth and women.
