ITC’s Market Analysis and Research offers a wide range of capacity building activities in developing countries for market analysts and export-oriented managers in the public and private sectors to conduct effective market analysis, an essential element of successful export strategies.

Market Analysis and Research capacity building activities cover a variety of topics addressing the needs of different groups ranging from trade promotion organisations and chambers of commerce to trade policy makers involved in trade negotiations or the development of national export strategies.

Market analysis topics include:

  • Introductory Market Analysis using ITC’s market analysis tools: Trade Map, Market Access Map, Investment Map, and Product Map;

  • Preparing Market Profiles: a four-day workshop to build the capacity of trade advisors to write customized reports on export opportunities for a product in a particular market;

  • Understanding and working with statistics for trade analysis. Topics addressed include: product nomenclatures, data limitations, methodologies for calculating indicators, using excel and other software packages for manipulating data;

  • Analysing a country’s trade competitiveness vis-à-vis benchmark countries;

  • Analysing opportunities for product / sector diversification;

  • Analysing opportunities for market diversification;

  • Analysing a country’s bargaining position in bilateral, regional or multilateral trade negotiations vis-à-vis negotiating modalities;

  • Analysing the impact of negotiation scenarios on a country’s economy.

The aim of our programs is ultimately to train participants in-depth so that they are in a position to further disseminate the tools, methodologies, skills and derived analysis to their colleagues and constituencies, including enterprises seeking potential export markets. To this end, we aim to build long- term relationship with participating institutions and regularly follow up our training with refreshed course material and new courses.

Our workshops are conducted with small groups and include discussions as well as interactive exercises to improve learning absorption and to make it easier for course content to be adapted to the specific needs of our partner institutions.

Our capacity building activities also endeavour to improve networking and information exchange between the private and public sectors and to foster effective cooperation among various institutions with an interest in international trade.

The costs for Market Analysis and Research capacity building workshops / seminars depend on their length and content. Currently we are also developing training material that can be delivered via web-based distance learning platforms.
