Vietnam: 2012/13 and 2013/14 groundnut situation

  • Vietnam: 2012/13 and 2013/14 groundnut situation

    by Market Insider

    Friday, 25 Apr. 2014

According to The United States Department of Agriculture(USDA/GAIN report no VM 4018 published on 14 April 2014, Vietnamese groundnut production and consumption increased in 2012/13 over the previous year and the trend is expected to continue in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Domestic production falls short of local demand, covering only about 62 per cent of crop needs, with imports completing consumption requirements. Groundnut exports are marginal, not exceeding 2 per cent of the total crop.

Although very limited, crushing of groundnuts is expected to slightly increase from 6 per cent of the crop in 2012/13 to 9 per cent in 2014/15, driven by the heavy reliance of the country on imported refined oils to meet consumer needs.

The following groundnut production, supply and demand statistics for the marketing years 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 are sourced from the General Statistics Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Global Trade Atlas and the local USDA staff. Marketing years in Vietnam start in January.
