Advances in information technology (IT) and information technology enabled services (ITES) have profoundly altered the business landscape and opened a new dimension of globalization: cross-border trade in services.

In such sectors, physical barriers affecting land-locked countries and island states are less important. Language skills, customer focus, time zones and telecommunications links have become more relevant determinants of competitiveness, offering new opportunities for latecomers to development to leapfrog from primary to tertiary industries.

    Current projects

    • e-Strategies build on ITC’s extensive analytical work on e-commerce by augmenting traditional sector strategies with a an e-commerce survey which allows stakeholders to assess the sector’s readiness for e-commerce
    • The Netherlands Trust Fund III, funded by the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), builds export sector competitiveness and aims to generate new export revenues for IT and ITES sector in Bangladesh, Kenya and Uganda.
    • Supporting Indian Trade and Investment for Africa (SITA) supports the IT-enabled products and services and Business Process Outsourcing (ITES-BPO) sector in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda through knowledge exchange and business partnership with the Indian ITES-BPO sector.
