NTF III – Uganda IT & ITES

  • The NTF III Uganda project seeks to improve livelihood and increase export revenues of SMEs by enhancing export competitiveness of the IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) sector in Uganda.

IT & ITES sector in Uganda?

IT & ITES is a relatively new sector in Uganda, but it has experienced tremendous progress over the last ten years, particularly in mobile, internet and PC. Uganda benefits from the strong political will to promote the IT & ITES sector, fundamental IP protection and cyber laws, and increasing IT-related infrastructure. Furthermore, the young population (70% of the youth under 35 years in 2010) is eager to join and expand the industry.

    Who will benefit?

Direct beneficiaries of the NTF III project include 30 carefully selected IT & ITES enterprises, as well as the government and two private sector industry associations: the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U/Ministry of ICT), the ICT Association of Uganda (ICTAU), and the Ugandan Business Process Outsourcing Association (UBPOA). Indirect beneficiaries are other firms and individuals in the sector who will benefit from enhanced sector competitiveness of Ugandan IT & ITES sector in the regional as well as global market.

    How will they benefit?

During the project implementation period 2014-2017 and onward, the project will increase export competitiveness of Ugandan IT & ITES sector by 1) creating and validating an export plan for the sector, 2) increasing export capacity of the selected SMEs, 3) improving the capacity of trade support institutions (TSIs) to provide export-related services to SMEs, and 4) expanding actual business linkages and partnerships in target export markets.
