The vision statement of an institution expresses a realistic, credible, attractive future for that institution. It is the ‘big picture’, illustrating what your institution expects to achieve. A vision statement should remain relatively constant. The normal life span of a vision statement is 10 to 20 years and therefore articulates the ultimate long-range goal for your institution. The time to revisit your vision statement is the point when your institution either has achieved its vision or has substantially moved away from it.
The vision should grasp the:
- beliefs
- basic values and
- self-understanding of your institution.
It will guide and motivate the institution's staff and support team. In order to incorporate your beliefs and values you will consequently translate your vision into your "mission statement".
