CHILE
Location
Chile is located to the east of South America. The country is
bordered by Peru to the north; Bolivia to the north east; Argentina
to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Chile has a total
land area of 6,339 sq km. Climate varies between desert,
Mediterranean and cool weather, between the north, central and
southern regions respectively.
Agricultural sector
Chile's main agricultural products include grapes, whole fresh
cow milk, indigenous chicken meat, indigenous cattle meat,
indigenous pig meat, apples, tomatoes, wheat, maize,
potatoes.
Brief overview of organic farming
There are 13,564 hectares of organic land in Chile and
approximately 550 organic farms operating in the country. Organic
land makes up 0.1% of the country's arable land. Most (80%) of the
organic good produced in Chile are exported. The government is
supporting the organic industry through it's Ministry of
Agriculture, research is being undertaken, and regulation
implemented, in order to improve organic standards. The Swiss
Ministry of Agriculture is working in collaboration with the
Chilean government to transfer technical support and expertise for
an improved organic sector in Chile.
Brief overview of key organic products
Most of the country's organic products are exported. Major
domestically sol organic products include fresh fruits and
vegetables, olive oil and wine. The main products which are
