WEDF 2016 - FAQs

    WEDF 2016 is co-hosted by the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade of Sri Lanka through the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB). It will take place on 12-13 October 2016 at the:


    Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH)

    Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07 – Colombo - Sri Lanka




    The theme of WEDF 2016 is ‘Trade for Success: Connect, Compete, Change.’

    Within the WEDF 2016, ITC and EDB will organize facilitated B2B meetings enabling opportunities for SMEs around the world to meet potential partners in the following sectors:

    • Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs)
    • Tourism
    • Specialty food, including tea and spices
    • Processed food
    • Apparel
    • Rubber and Manufacturing

    Company visits have been organized for all WEDF participants on the morning of 14 October. Participants can express their interest during the registration (part 2, once participation is approved). For more information on company visits click here.

    A complimentary visit to the Boat Show Sri Lanka will be offered to all WEDF participants on the 14th October in the afternoon. For more information click here.


    For security reason it is mandatory for all attendees to pre-register in order to receive a badge and be allowed access to the WEDF venue.


    If you haven’t done so, you can register online at https://itcevents.event2mobile.com/Account/Registration. Once you fill all mandatory fields in the application form, the WEDF team will approve your application and you will receive a login and password which will allow you to access and complete the second part of the registration. Please keep this login information as it will allow to access the WEDF mobile event application during the conference (more details below).

    Badges will be made available at the BMICH prior to the conference as of 11 October. Once on-site, please pick your badge up as soon as possible to avoid the crowd of the opening.



    Flights: recommended arrival date is 10 October for B2B participants or 11 October for all other participants. Recommended departure date from Colombo is 14 October in the late afternoon/ evening (after the company visits).

    All participants (except speakers and government representatives) are requested to obtain their own valid travel documents and make any necessary arrangements to travel to Colombo. Participants can apply through the online visa page of the Department of Immigration and Emigration: www.eta.gov.lk under the business ETA category.


    Participants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Niger and Yemen are advised to apply their ETA in advance as their application might require more time to be treated.


    Participants from Syria can get visa on arrival at the airport based on prior recommendation from Sri Lanka EDB and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


    Participants need to make sure they register to the WEDF using same information as displayed on their official passports (exact passport name and number) to enable the Department of Immigration and Emigration to expedite the process at the airport.


    Only approved participants will be provided (at the part 2 of the registration module) with an invitation letter from EDB which can be used to support visa applications (non ETA).



    Participants should book accommodation in one of the following hotels to be able to take advantage of the free transportation from/to the airport and from/to the WEDF venue.


    The list of hotels here below provides preferential rates to WEDF participants, the below rates are inclusive of all local Taxes (approximately 30%),  whereas rates published rates on the hotel websites are not inclusive of any taxes.

    Once your hotel reservation is confirmed, kindly include this information (ie. in which hotel you will be staying) in the WEDF registration page (you can log in again and add it)


    Meals are provided during the conference (lunch, dinner and coffee breaks). A Sri Lankan night dinner will take place on 12 October at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel (Dress code: national dress or smart business wear).



    Venue: WEDF will provide shuttle bus transportation from/to the airport and from/to the WEDF venue (BMICH) as well as to the other partner hotels, during the 11-14 October dates.


    At your arrival at the airport of Colombo, local staff from the organizing team will welcome you and facilitate your transportation.



    All Ministers and Heads of organizations will benefit from VIP treatment during their stay in Colombo according to the Protocol of the Government of Sri Lanka. This includes airport formalities at the arrival/departure and transportation. More information will be provided directly by EDB.



    WEDF 2016 will be held in English. Interpretation will be provided for both plenary and in-focus sessions into French and Spanish.



    We recommend all participants to bring their own laptops if needed. A cyber café is available in the WEDF venue. WIFI connection is available in the whole venue.



    You are encouraged to purchase a local SIM card to facilitate communications during the event with the WEDF team. Sales points of the Sri Lankan phone companies are available at the airport arrival area.



    The WEDF event mobile application (smartphones and tablets) is now available for free downloading on Android and Apple store (search for ITC events). Using your registration login and password you will be able to access the full event programme and speakers’ information, the latest event news, updates, photos and any other practical information. In addition, participants will be able to connect among themselves before, during and after WEDF 2016.



    WEDF 2016 plenary and in-focus sessions will be broadcasted live on the WEDF website.

    Local laws and customs: Participants are kindly requested to respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of their actions to ensure that they do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs, especially if you intend to visit religious areas.

    Be aware of cultural sensitivities when filming or photographing people and religious, military or construction sites. If in doubt, seek permission.
