Phase I: SME Training

Winning with the web - website

The Winning With The Web (WWW) programme was designed for the purpose of identifying and disseminating best practices in E-trade and in the usage of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to improve business effectiveness and efficiency. These best practices can then be used as examples of what can be done in e-trade and with ICTs.

The cases come from a wide range of manufacturing and service industries. They are selected to provide insights into resource requirements, optimal use of existing infrastructure to integrate ICT, and issues of global relevance such as gender and the environment.

The WWW process was divided into three main phases (Phase A, Phase B, and Phase C).
Phase A, is based on evaluation of websites of Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from the selected countries participating in the e-Trade Bridge Programme for SMEs. The object of this phase was to find SME’s who have implemented best practices and write cases about them.

Phase B, is conducted by National Consultants who searched locally for SMEs in their respective countries, and write Best Practice cases in the company’s use of ICTs. Consultants interview managers of SMEs using guidelines provided by ITC in order to collect the information necessary for the cases. The object is to get cases, which have implemented the use of ICTs to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of their business processes.

Phase C, is designed for the purpose of counselling and Enabling SMEs to make them e-ready. The National Consultant looks at SMEs, which have not yet reaped the benefits of using ICTs, and helps them to make use of ICTs. This can only be done if the Consultant determines that the enterprise is management and export-ready by using ITC tools. The National Consultant also uses ITC tools to assess the e-opportunity of the SME, followed by training or counselling interventions, and additional support and services as required. The National Consultant then writes a case documenting the process taken to make the SME e-ready and how its business processes was improved by using the appropriate ICT.

The WWW case stories help trainers and counsellors provide best practice examples to their clients when designing interventions to improve their e-trade competences. SME managers will benefit from these cases when applying ICT to their business processes. The WWW cases are used in ITC’s Building National Teams of Trainers and Counsellors training programme.
