Joint Integrated Technical Assistance Programme - JITAP 
Countries covered: Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia and Burkina Faso
The main objective of this joint UNCTAD/WTO/ITC programme is to enhance development opportunities of African country partners, through their more effective participation in the Multilateral Trading System (MTS). It consists of 15 clusters, one of which is on “Quality management in MTS context and export packaging”. National Enquiry Points for TBT in seven countries have been strengthened through the provision of IT equipment, training and advisory missions. Assistance was provided, inter alia, for these seven National Enquiry Points to prepare their national databases on standards and technical regulations.

Joint ITC/Commonwealth Secretariat (COMSEC) project on case studies to determine technical assistance needs in the areas of TBT and SPS 
Countries covered: Kenya, Mauritius, Uganda, Namibia, Jamaica and Malaysia
Case studies have been conducted in the above countries. The objective was, inter alia, to determine:

The problems for participation in international standardization activities
The problems when exporting products due to technical regulations and SPS measures
The technical assistance needs in the areas of TBT and SPS

The outcome will be:

Focused technical assistance by COMSEC and ITC for capacity building at national level
Publication of a joint COMSEC/ITC publication on TBT and SPS

Multifunctional technical cooperation for promotion and expansion of exports of selected products 
Country covered: Bolivia

The project concentrates on the following three aspects:

Development of selected products for traditional or potential markets with the purpose of achieving a greater impact over the short or medium term
Development of a national capacity in the areas of enterprise management and foreign trade
Establishment or reinforcement of mechanisms necessary for foreign trade promotion and development, comprising a network of public and private sector institutions

The module on Quality Management provides assistance in the areas of ISO/IEC 17025, HACCP and ISO 9000.

Integrating Central Asian CIS Member Countries into the Multilateral Trading System (Phase I)
Countries covered: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 
The objective of this programme is the development, diversification and increase of the five participating countries’ foreign trade, particularly their intra-regional trade, and competitiveness and their successful integration into the multilateral trading system, by providing technical assistance in the field of foreign trade strategy, trade support services at the institutional level, enterprise support services, private sector supply management, public procurement and export quality management. The project consists of seven modules within the preparatory assistance phase of a five year programme. The immediate objectives of the module on Quality Management are the following:


a full assessment of the needs in the area of SQAM to enable the development of a technical assistance module on “Quality Management” for Phase II of the project
to inform stakeholders, including the business community, of the importance of standards and conformity assessment for international trade.
