Improving Trade Support Programmes: What? How? and Who?
ITC's third e-discussion forum in
2001 on Small and Medium Enterprises started on 13 August. In the first two
days, it focused on the proposition below:
INTRODUCTORY PROPOSITION
National trade support programmes must assume three roles:
- They must assist the exporter to exploit existing commercial
opportunities.
- They must encourage non-exporters to enter the international
marketplace.
- They must promote new areas of international
competitiveness.
The longer-term and more challenging roles of developing new
exporters and export sectors have traditionally been given less
emphasis in developing countries and transition economies.
- Which of these roles should have priority and what are the
key programmes required?
- Should the development of new export products be of concern
to an SME manager? As an SME manager, what programmes would
you like to see put in place?
- How should existing programmes be improved?
- How should these programmes be implemented, and by whom?
