e-Spices

E-Business continues to grow, but the foundation upon which all e-business activities rests, a network, is yet to be put to use by a majority of SMEs in developing countries. As a result, the use of information technology to enhance export performance has so far not been successfully tapped by SMEs in the spice sector of developing world.

During the 2004 World Spice Congress held in India, spice exporters from several spice-producing countries expressed keen interest to ITC to assist them in exploiting the benefits of IT to increase their exports.

Immediate beneficiary countries would include Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda.

Following an initial diagnostic survey in selected countries, and working jointly with the American and European Spice Trade Association, ITC will initiate full-scale technical co-operation with spice exporters from developing countries on e-business network development.
