Brazilian papaya exporters have closed the month of June on an upward trend, with the foreign trade statistics showed an 18% year-on-year rise in volume to 16.500 metric tons (mt) in May.

According to the publication Hortifruti Brasil lower consumption at home had prompted a greater export focus backed by stronger demand in Europe, due to high temperatures; however the spike in volume was not matched by income in dollars which fell 7% to USD 18,6 million mainly as a result of the currency depreciation.

Europe purchased 91% of Brazil’s papaya exports for the period, with Portugal and the Netherlands as the main destination markets; elsewhere shippers have sent “good volumes” to the UAE and Uruguay, with growth of 372% and 19% respectively year-on-year over the first five months of 2015.
