In 2011, the TEP began a new collaboration with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). ITC will analyze the trade in python skins and look at ways to strengthen the sustainability of the trade through engagement with the fashion industry which uses the skins for high end accessories like handbags and shoes.
International supply chains that source animal and plant products in a manner which does not ensure the legality and sustainability of such sourcing may be contributing to the overexploitation of certain species.
ITC, in collaboration with CITES is completing an analysis of the Python trade and the challenges and opportunities posed in the international supply chain. The study will examine the legal and illegal trade and highlight best practices in managing sustainable supply chains.
The final study will be published in July 2012.
