    ICT Training for Cameroon's Businesswomen

    ITC launched a new project to help women entrepreneurs in Cameroon expand their business regionally and internationally, using information and communication technologies (ICTs) and networks.

    ITC will focus on building sustainable training and counselling services for women entrepreneurs on how to apply practical e-solutions in their business strategies and improve the efficiency of their operations.

    Between July and October 2003, ITC trained trainers in Cameroon using its E-trade Bridge approach and tools, and fieldwork. Based on this experience, the trainers will develop training material adapted to the local context and to women entrepreneurs' needs, allowing them tconduct four pilot training programmes for at least 80 women entrepreneurs in November 2003.

    To implement these activities, ITC is partnering with the Association de Soutien et d'Appui à la Femme Entrepreneur (ASAFE), a non-governmental organization, that provides business support services to some 3,000 women entrepreneurs in Cameroon.

    "Many African countries are still suspicious of information technology," says Gisèle Yitamben, Director of ASAFE. "They have not understood the immense power of the Internet. The solution to poverty among women and their children is in information. There is no limit to our future."

    ITC hopes that this project will be expanded to other African countries and sub-regions to help strengthen the business network of women in Africa, allowing them to gain a competitive edge using ICTs.

    ITC is undertaking the project in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat. The project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, and the Agence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie.
