Which inputs are allowed in organic animal husbandry?
In principle, livestock should be fed on organically
produced feeding stuff. However, most standards and regulations
provide for use of limited amounts of certain specified non-organic
feeding stuff, as well as certain specified feed additives. Animal
health should be ensured through appropriate livestock density,
high quality feed, and rearing conditions appropriate to the given
species. The use of medicinal substances is restricted to certain
circumstances and inputs, usually specified on a positive list. The
use of chemically synthesised substances for preventive treatment
or growth promotion is prohibited.
