The Arbitration Court at the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established more than 100 years ago as a Court of Conciliation to settle civil disputes between legal persons at least one of which was foreign. Since 1989 it acts as a justice-administering institution, independent of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Its jurisdiction covers civil property disputes, as well as contractual disputes, between physical and juridical persons, Bulgarian and foreign based, submitted to it by an arbitration agreement or an international treaty. Between 1982 and 2002 the Court settled about 5,600 cases, involving parties from 40 countries. Between 1992 and 2002 1, 350 international and 708 internal disputes have been settled by arbitration, 60% within 9 months from the moment of application.

The Court administers arbitration and conciliation under its own sets of Rules. It also renders assistance to "ad hoc" arbitration in accordance with its Rules for such arbitration.
